Sunday Worship, September 24th
We are pleased to welcome Rev. Belita Mitchell to the Oakton CoB on Sunday, September 24th at 11:00 am worship service observing the International Day of Prayer for Peace.
Rev. Mitchell currently serves as Senior Pastor at the Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren in Harrisburg, PA. Following service, Pastor Mitchell will be presenting an additional program on the topic of Agape-Satyagraha work in the Harrisburg community.

Assisted Living Facilities
Children under twelve are invited to make cards for the elderly living in area assisted living facilities including The Virginian, Sunrise, and others. The goal is to make and distribute 200 cards.
Shelter House operates a number of supportive and transitional housing facilities in Fairfax County including the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter and Artemis House, Fairfax County’s Domestic Violence Shelter. Shelter House is also the parent organization of NOVACO, a provider of transitional housing for women who are victims of domestic violence.
We will be accepting donations of dry laundry detergent and snack size sealable plastic bags. Volunteers are needed to divide up the laundry detergent into single use packets for use in the shelters.
For the Days for Girls feminine hygiene kit we will be doing the following:
- stringing ribbon through already sewn bags
- top stitching and ironing the shield, one component of the kit attaching snaps to the shield (requires no sewing)
- tri‐folding pre‐sewn liners, another component of the kit
Those with sewing machines, ironing boards and irons are invited to bring them.
Committee for Helping Others
CHO is an all‐volunteer organization that helps the needy in Vienna, Oakton, Dunn Loring, and Merrifield by providing emergency financial assistance, emergency food aid, clothing, furniture, and meals on wheels. We will be collecting donations of clothing and food for distribution in our community. Needed items are:
cooking oil, pancake mix/syrup, tomato sauce, canned beef stew, canned fruit, applesauce, toddler boys clothing, toddler girls clothing, childrens shoes, boys/girls 7‐14 clothing, mens pants and shirts, winter jackets, cleaning products, toilet paper, hygiene products, household supplies, diapers of all sizes, laundry detergent
Volunteers are needed to accept and sort food and clothing donations.
In addition, CHO will be the beneficiary of a service project to renovate one of our furniture warehouses by removing rotten flooring. Volunteers are needed to move furniture, and dispose of rotten flooring.
Flint Hill Cemetery Association
Flint Hill Cemetery, located in Oakton, Virginia, is believed to be one of the oldest community cemeteries in Fairfax County. Dating back to 1852, it was originally known as the Flint Hill Burial Ground, when Oakton was known as Flint Hill. Flint Hill Cemetery is managed by volunteers. Volunteers are needed to pick up trash and weed. Please bring garden rakes, gloves, thick garbage bags, and gardening shears.

Rev. Mitchell made history in 2007 as the first Black American female to serve as Annual Conference Moderator of the Church of the Brethren. Known as a dynamic speaker and powerful preacher, Rev. Mitchell has shared the gospel message in pulpits across the United States, Puerto Rico and Nigeria, West Africa.
A strong advocate of the power of prayer, Rev. Mitchell is actively involved in a variety of community action prayer events. An ongoing area of concentration has been praying for peace in the South Allison Hill community and the city of Harrisburg. She currently serves as Chair of the Harrisburg Chapter of Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence. Heeding God’s Call is a faith based movement designed to reduce the sale and distribution of illegal handguns.
